Some people shudder at the mere thought of moving houses as it requires a lot of planning, preparation, and effort. However, with a few helpful tips and tricks, you can ease the burden of moving houses.
Here are some of the best ways to pack efficiently during your home relocation:
(1) Start packing well ahead of time:
Start transferring items into designated boxes at least a few weeks before the date of the move. Set priorities and deadlines for the items that you need to pack and move them into their assigned boxes ahead of time. Your home should gradually be cleared of all unnecessary items as you get closer to your moving day until everything is packed up.
(2) Categorise your items into “KDS”:
KDS stands for Keep, Donate, and Store. Sort your items based on the what you’d like to keep, donate, or store.
(3) Fragile boxing and packaging:
Some items require careful packing to avoid damage. Prepare different sized boxes, strong sealing tape, as well as bubble wrap, styrofoam, newspapers or any other packaging materials you might need to protect fragile items.
(4) Enlist the help of a self storage company:
Renting some extra storage space can save you a lot of time and energy. If there is a gap between your moving out and moving in date, you can enlist the help of a storage rental company to store your items in between moves.
Packing also can be a problem when you’re dealing with different types of items. With a few tips in hand, you should be able to get out of this headache. Some items require special packing materials and techniques to avoid damage, and a good categorisation system can help you sort your items easier when you need to unpack. Here are some ideas on how to pack different types of items:
Clothes can be folded and packed separately according to the season. Some clothes such as suits or expensive dresses can’t be folded normally to avoid wrinkles. To protect expensive fabrics from stains and damage, you can rent a covered clothes rack from a moving company to transport your clothes safely. Your “everyday” clothes can be packed in a separate, smaller suitcase for easy unpacking later. If you have a lot of seasonal clothes or bedding items that you are not using, you can place them in a mini storage first.
Sort and package all daily necessities such as toiletries, children’s toys, work items, medicines, small appliances and such in separate boxes. Carefully mark the contents of the box to avoid confusion when you are trying to unpack later. All necessities that are likely to be used within a few days after the move should also be packed separately so they can be easily found when you need them. Additionally, any perishable food items should be consumed beforehand and any leftovers should be packaged in one box, ready for immediate consumption.
Glass fittings, vases and various fragile items should be individually packaged in newspapers or bubble wrap and then placed in a storage box. Insert padded materials like foam rubber or styrofoam in between gaps inside the box or container to avoid damage due to shaking and handling. Instead of discarding old clothes, use them to fill any gaps in the box for extra padding and security. When you’re done, simply throw them away. It is also useful to use an industrial-grade logistics box, with a plastic hard shell that can withstand pressure to protect more fragile items.
After ensuring that all lids are closed, any jars or bottles should be wrapped in newspaper and placed together in one carton. Mark the contents on the outside of the box and always place them in an upright position. Cups and dishes of the same size can be packed into a large bag, each separated by a lining of newspaper. All appliances should also be placed in its original box and stuffed with lots of bubble wrapping.
While the van or lorry is being loaded, heavier items such as books should be placed at the bottom first, and smaller items are placed on top so they will not be crushed. A good tip is to use smaller boxes for heavy items like books and use larger boxes for lighter items like clothes. This way, you’ll distribute the weight evenly and avoid any possibility of hurting your back.
After you’ve done all your packing, you can use different coloured labels to indicate the contents of the boxes and write down where the box should be placed in your new home. This makes it easier for the movers to know exactly where the boxes should go. Any boxes containing fragile items should be affixed with the appropriate ‘fragile’ sticker to ensure careful handling and transporting, while documents and other valuables should always be carried with you at all times. With these tips in mind, moving homes can turn into a more joyful occasion.
